某大学医院里，以某个患者的可疑死亡为契机，无法再上升的病理学医生·藤卷达臣发现了未知的杀人球菌“Gift”。如果这种球菌侵入体内，患者很快就会死亡。后来，球菌完全消失，死因只能诊断为急性心力衰竭，这是一种让完全犯罪成为可能的可怕球菌。意外登上权力阶梯的藤卷，能否在围绕杀人球菌的壮烈求生中生存下来？生存与死亡，正义与邪恶，纠葛到最后，他看到的景象是？而将球菌带入医院，导致连环杀人案的真凶究竟是谁呢？。When he learns his days are numbered old count Hervé de Kéraudren decides to hide in a secret alcove and to die there, just to annoy his heirs. As a result of his body not being found the latter will have to wait for five years until they can inherit the count's money.
